BA Internet Principle · 03

A model cannot speak on anyone’s behalf.

A model finds patterns, estimates possibilities and generates outputs. It does not carry authority to speak for a person, institution, library or truth.

Output ≠ judgement · Sources · Uncertainty · Human approval

Core principle

A fluent answer is not authority to represent—and not a guarantee of accuracy.

Model output is considered together with its sources, context, date, uncertainty and intended use. Critical decisions and public representation cannot be handed to a model without human review.

The model generates; people verify, limit and remain accountable.

A useful distinction

Producing an output and carrying representation are different acts.

01

Model capability

Generates output

  • Prediction and classification
  • Draft text and images
  • Patterns and similarity
  • Suggested actions
02

Human responsibility

Carries judgement and representation

  • Verifies sources
  • Sets the context
  • Considers harm and rights
  • Makes the release decision

Model card

Every released model and workflow should carry a clear statement.

  • Purpose and scopeWhat may the model be used for, and which decisions must it not make?
  • Sources and dateWhich data and period support the information?
  • UncertaintyHow are error, missing representation and false confidence made visible?
  • Human approvalWho verifies the work and takes responsibility at each stage?
  • Representation statementIs it clear that the output is not automatically a human or institutional view?
  • Way to stopHow can incorrect or harmful use be stopped?
